How To Eat Food, beta 1

Introduction

This is the first pass at a project that's been kicking around in my head for about...10 years, now.

The concept is a reference for how to correctly eat food of any given ethnicity - that is, how you would eat food in a polite, but native household.

This can cause problems sometimes, as the native culture in many places has been westernized. Now, this may not seem a problem, as one could simply say "You should use the currently polite method", and when appropriate, I'll note that. However, I am also interested in how things were done, since that often gives insights to how the food came to be the way it is.

An example of this is indian food. Since the days of the Raj, the British standard has become the 'correct' way to eat. However, if you look at the breads of Indian food, it's obvious that there was a use for these that was more than just as a side dish.

Organization

As is obvious for a world-wide survey of this sort, this set of pages is organized by continent, then country, and then region, as appropriate.

A plea for help!

I'm never going to be able to do this all without help - which is why it's taken me this long to even get started. As of the time that I'm starting this, early January, 1997, I've got basic information for approximately 20 cuisines and knowledge of about 150 more cuisines that I know I knothing about. If you have first-hand knowledge of a cuisine, if you know of a page about a cuisine, if you have any good pointers, or can help in any way, please mail me and tell me about it. You'll get thanks from me and a reference on the Acknowledgements Page
